Black and White

It’s hard to say whether black and white ever goes out of fashion, but certainly spring/summer 2013 collections have seen an abundance of black and white.

Marc Jacobs has run away with the trend, combining thick and thin stripes, houndstooth, zigzag and animal print. In what looked liked a sixties inspired collection, Jacobs has played with frills, high necks, epochal sixties mini dresses, with fat scalloped edging and full length psychedelic patterned maxis.

One design house which has always celebrated the timelessness and sophistication of black and white is Chanel. And Karl Lagerfeld’s latest 2013 spring/summer collection has featured this classic combination.

Designers across the board are embracing this trend, including Dolce & Gabbana, Balmain and Ralph Lauren.

After the wealth of colour afforded us from last season an injection of black and white might, for some, be welcome relief. But designers are certainly not being boring and resting on your fashion laurels is not an option. It’s all about shape, pattern, print and textual fabrics this coming spring/summer.

But whatever your style, this latest trend has something for you. From the stark patterns of Marc Jacobs to the chic style of Marissa Webb (below) there is scope for creativity and flexibility this season.

  1. I think black, white and grey is the most gorgeous color palette of all. After a brief flirtation with color, I’m going back to my old reliable combo. It just didn’t work out with color – sorry color it wasn’t you, it was me.
